Berumuda Heatwave Tracking
Tracking the heatwave in Bermuda 2024
On this page, we're tracking the heatwave in Bermuda. We're featuring 6 survey points in Elbow Beach, Bermuda. Ted Gosling is the manager of these sites and is conducting all the surveys.
Survey sites being monitored:
What's very interesting about this site is that around August 18, a tropical storm passed by, bringing cooler water to the Bermuda coastline. This sudden break in the severe heat stress has helped the corals recover from heat stress at this site.
The exact same scenario happened in the fall of 2023 and 2022 when hurricanes came and cooled down the reef. 2022 was the warmest summer out of these three, and the hurricane that cooled down the reef that summer came at the last moment because many corals were severely bleached, but they managed to recover much thanks to the cooler temperature. Watch the journey of the corals from healthy to bleached to recovery in 2022 on this page.

What happened during and after the heatwave in 2022?
This reef in Elbow Beach, Bermuda experienced a heatwave in the summer of 2022. The bleaching threshold for this reef is 28.4 ℃, and the water stayed consistently warm until a storm passed by and drastically cooled down this reef. The first image displays the corals before the heatwave, and the last three images come from surveys after the heatwave. Read more about Ted, the heatwave, and surveys in the blog post!

This page displays all of the surveys conducted at this survey point from 05/20/2021 until 12/26/2022. You can also see the bleaching and healing process of the coral.
